Do Not Be Afraid

Scripture: Isaiah 12:2 (NRSV) I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation.

Devotion: About a year ago, some of my family and I drove through West Texas at night. It was dark, and it seemed like we were in the middle of nowhere. I looked up and saw the many stars in the sky, helping us and other travelers to stay on the path. It was a constant reminder that though it was dark and dreary, God was near showing us the way.

During this Advent season, when days become shorter and nights grow longer, bad news could quickly overtake our thoughts and minds. However, it is here that we are to be reminded of these words from the prophet Isaiah, who says to us, “Do not be afraid, trust in God, and discover the joy that is present in knowing that God is our strength and might, and knowing that God is our salvation.”

The same similar message was proclaimed by the angel who said: “Do not be afraid, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people; to you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Prayer: God, help us place our trust in you, not fear. Amen.
