Christ the King: Unmoved by Human Loyalty

This past Sunday, we marked Christ the King Sunday by reflecting on John 18:33-37, where Jesus declares that His kingdom is not of this world. His kingship stands apart from earthly power, grounded instead in truth—a truth that does not shift with human loyalties or fleeting allegiances.

We considered how easily loyalty can waver, shaped by convenience or popular opinion. The story of Luz Long and Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics offers a powerful example. Long risked everything to stand by Owens, defying the prejudices and racism of his time, just as Jesus calls us to live by God’s truth, even when it is inconvenient or difficult. As followers of Christ, we are challenged to honor his reign not only in our words but in our daily actions, standing firm in love, justice, and grace.

This week, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, let us give thanks for the unshakable kingdom of Christ. While we may gather around tables and reflect on our blessings, may we also remember the greater truth of God’s love—a love that calls us to serve, to reconcile, and to give generously. Thanksgiving reminds us to live with gratitude for the truth that Jesus proclaims and the hope that his reign brings to our lives.

And as Advent begins next Sunday, we turn our hearts toward the anticipation of Christ’s coming—not only as the infant born in Bethlehem but as the King whose reign of peace and truth is already breaking into our world. In this season of preparation, may our gratitude lead us to embrace the hope, love, joy, and peace of God’s kingdom with renewed faithfulness.

Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving and a meaningful beginning to Advent,

Pastor Sela
