A New Path
Scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NRSV)
Devotion: A friend in our church had recently become involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry and had given a couple of talks to the congregation about this ministry. As it turns out, this friend was going to be the leader of the next Kairos weekend, and she asked me if I would consider being on her team. I told her that I would pray about it, but in my head, I was saying “no”. My reluctance to be a part of this ministry had nothing to do with a fear of being around the lady prisoners or being inside a prison. I felt inadequate in that I would not know what to say to them and that I was possibly not spiritual enough to be in this ministry. My Upper Room devotional that next day had as the scripture a verse, which I am paraphrasing, that stated, “I will put the words in your mouth .” I knew at that very moment that the Lord was sending me into this prison ministry.
Sometimes when we are called to be a part of some ministry, our positive response is almost immediate. Other times, we feel that we do not have the abilities to be involved in a certain ministry. A quote that I heard many times during my years in the Kairos Prison Ministry was, “God does not call the equipped. He equips those that He calls”. If we just respond with a “yes”, God will make sure that we have all that we need to be in ministry and to serve Him.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help us to always faithfully respond to your call to be in ministry and to share your love and grace with the world. Amen
