Rejoice
Scripture: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7 NRSV)
Devotion: One of my favorite Bible verses is from Philippians 4:4-7, in which Paul encourages the Philippians to “rejoice in the Lord always.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
I remember these verses during Lent because I think Jesus was sending us such a beautiful message. When we read these words, we may think that this means we should always be happy and never worried or anxious. During the days prior to Easter, Jesus was going through the most difficult time we can ever imagine, and he admits to being worried and anxious. But with these verses, we are reminded to choose peace in the midst of sorrowful times and know that we have a God who is always near, who hears our prayers, and who wants to give us peace.
One way we can do this is to make time to pray and with thanksgiving, present our requests to God. This is a reminder to us that God was working in the life of Jesus, just as he works in our lives.
Prayer: Dear Lord, May our lives be a joy to you as you are to ours. Amen.
