Terry Meyer
Good Shephard
Scripture: The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me.You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (Psalm 23 NIV)
Devotion: I look around our society, which is full of so many distractions and busyness that bring temptations for many of us. There are so many meetings that require our presence, many functions to attend, and demands to be met, and there is a risk that all these things will tempt us to drift away from our relationship with the Lord. The psalmist’s words invoke an image of peace, rest, and tranquility taken next to a stream of quiet beauty. I have been blessed so many times as I take my daily walk and experience the beauty of nature; sometimes, I have stopped halfway to read scripture to meditate on how God’s creation gives us a place to communion with Him. There have been many times when life has been busy, and there have been many life distractions; I have recalled the words of the psalmist. During this season of Lent, I want to encourage you to take a moment and ask our Good Shepherd to lead you on the path He has set for you.
Prayer: Good Shepherd, help to quiet the distractions so I can hear your voice. Lead me in the way of green pastures and quiet waters, and guide me in your paths of righteousness for your kingdom and your glory. Amen.
