Look for the Light
Scripture: John 1:1-5 (NRSV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
Devotion: Have you ever been scared in the dark? Just a small candle or flashlight can bring such relief that it is hard to describe. Ask a child what a difference a night light makes.
For us in Fort Worth, this is literally the darkest time of the year. A time when the night is the longest.
But if you drive around the city right now, you will see lights everywhere. Houses glow with lights on eaves, Christmas trees have warm windows, and store displays beckon shoppers with wares. We want the darkness to end. We want there to be light.
John tells of the creation story in this scripture and harkens back to Genesis 1 when God declares, “Let there be light.” John expands this to be the Word of God, a light that darkness cannot overcome.
As Christians, we are starting our year. We look forward to the birth of a baby. But we are doing more than that. We literally and symbolically declare war on the darkness. We light candles weekly as we believe The Light is coming. We call out to God to send Christ to be with us. We are a people of hope, and this is us showing the world that we look for the light.
As you go about your day, remember to look for the light, and when you find it, reflect it to others.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your Light. Shine in our lives so that your world will glow for all to see. In the name of Christ, Amen.
