God’s Unfailing Love and Grace

Scripture: Ezekiel 36:26 (NRSV) “A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”

Devotion: I realized how important God’s grace was in my life during Advent in 1981 when I had my youngest child (Sarah) still with us. She was born in November 1980, and 5 months later, she was in St Louis Children’s hospital fighting for her life. This was when I was doing great in my career and didn’t have time to spend with our Lord. I attended on Christmas and Easter, but Edna was always faithful as a United Methodist to participate in her church. Her church friends were there for our family; we still had three children that had to be taken care of. While working and driving back & forth to St Louis, it took me three hours to drive one way. The Lord was using this time to teach me what His grace meant. During this time, I met a young girl and her family in the same room as Sarah. Her family was dealing with many more medical problems with her. But they took their time to minister to a family (us) that they did not know and had their priest visit us since we were in a very unfamiliar place. At this time, I was still in the dark, but later I recognized God was teaching me His meaning of grace. He was using others to teach a hard nose guy that His grace is given to us even when we do not know we need it.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the unfailing love and grace you give us through others in our lives. Amen!
